Join an award-winning 5 Star Library! The Schaumburg Township District Library has an onsite part-time Information Desk Assistant position open. We are looking for a personable individual to provide library services to our customers: finding materials, assisting users with library technology, reserving library meeting spaces, and registering for library programs and events. This position involves extensive interaction with the public to provide customers access to the full range of library services via in-person, telephone, online, and other modes of delivery. Hours are as follows and require flexibility.

  • Fridays 1:00pm-5:00pm
  • Saturdays 8:30am-5:00pm
  • The 2nd Sunday of the month 11:30am-5:00pm

The schedule is based on the needs of the library and could change if and when needed. Starting pay is $13.74-$17.17, based on skills and qualifications.

Position Summary:

The Information Desk Assistant uses courteous and effective customer service skills to assist and fulfill library users' needs for materials, information, and services. The Information Desk Assistant keeps up-to-date on and registers patrons for library programs and activities and reserves study rooms for patrons. This position requires good organizational and communication skills and the flexibility and training to move from task to task in a team environment.

Requirements & Skills for the Position:

  • Positive and friendly attitude is a must.
  • Prior customer service experience required.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in working with the public and co-workers, with a demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team environment.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment and excel in our culture.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Windows 10, MS Office 10 and the internet are required. Experience with Microsoft Office 365 is a plus.
  • Experience serving multicultural audiences preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Answer patrons' general inquiries and directional questions about the Library and its services.
  • Maintain the registration of patrons for adult library programs and the scheduling of Library meeting and study rooms.
  • Assist patrons with copy machines, copying, faxing, scanning, and microfilm reader and printer.
  • Retrieve and re-shelve magazines and newspapers, etc.
  • Handle financial transactions and maintain cash drawer.
  • Keep apprised of Library programs, policies and procedures and building layout to assist patrons most effectively.
  • Maintain working knowledge of the Library catalog.
  • Attend meetings and training as required or requested.
  • Provide professional courtesy to all patrons and employees; maintain patron and employee confidentiality.
  • Clear communication either in person, on the telephone, and in writing.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and move a cart up to 100 pounds.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED), with related experience and/or training. Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications is required. Customer service experience is required.
