Schaumburg Township District Library is looking to hire a detail oriented, energetic, knowledgeable, Early Literacy Librarian who is experienced in working with diverse communities. Our opportunity is for 37.5 hours per week to be scheduled during library hours; required to work some nights and weekends. The schedule is based on the needs of the library and could change if and when needed. The range for this position is starting with $47,498.00 to $59,372.00 based on skills and qualifications.

Position Summary:

The Early Literacy Librarian is an early literacy expert responsible for developing and implementing early literacy experiences, services, and programs for children birth through preschoolers and their caregivers. This librarian will collaborate with local preschools and childcare centers to help community children develop the early literacy skills they need for future school success.

The Early Literacy Librarian is responsible for assessing and fulfilling the patrons' need for information or materials. The vital role of the Librarian is that of guidance, direction, and instruction. The Librarian is also responsible for weeding and adding to specific areas of the circulating collection and for satisfying public service requirements. The Librarian 2 focuses additional attention to managing a specialized area.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan and present story times and other early literacy programs to preschools, daycares, and other early childhood agencies in the community.
  • Provide early literacy training for youth services staff, area teachers, and community partners as requested.
  • Collaborate with YS Program Coordinator in developing library's story time schedule and additional early literacy programming opportunities.
  • Evaluate early literacy programs and develop long-range plans for early literacy services.
  • Create and implement age-appropriate programs and services, and evaluate impact and effectiveness through outcome-based measures.
  • Develop and conduct tours, presentations, and off-site outreach.
  • Build and maintain relationships with area preschools, daycares and early childhood agencies in the community.
  • Work with other library departments to develop large scale intergenerational programs.
  • Lead or assist in the design, implementation and evaluation of new services and programs that support library initiatives, department objectives, and community demand. Provide information, reference services, and readers' advisory to a diverse population. Be a creative problem solver, who takes responsibility to satisfy and patron's request. Assess patrons' needs effectively, either in person, over the phone, or in writing. Work with all ages effectively.
  • Evaluate, purchase, and weed materials in assigned collection areas. Maintain working knowledge of the Library's reference tools and materials. Maintain working knowledge of the Library's circulating collection. Maintain professional involvement in the library science industry. Keep current on age-appropriate trends, emerging technologies, issues and research and analyze statistics, and write reports and allied fields.
  • Participate in library wide committees and attend monthly meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

Masters of Library Science (MLS degree) from an accredited ALA accredited university or school or comparable education work experience developing programs and services for the children birth to age 8 and their caregivers is preferred. Working knowledge or word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications is required.

Requirements for Position:

  • This position requires proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English, as well as Spanish, Mandarin or Polish preferred.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions or complaints
